Why girls and young women are gang-raped in India

                  Utter failure of the system

- Harish Jharia

In the recent times there has been a steep escalation in the cases of gang rapes against girls and women in India. Such cases depend on the sexual attitude of male population towards their female counterparts in a particular society, place and region. It also depends on the careless and unsecured venturing out by girls and women at late nights and in secluded places.

Following are the categories of sexual offenders who are suspected to commit gang rapes on girls and women:
  1. The gang-rapists are usually found in the age group between 17 year to 35 year
  2. These sex offenders are usually unmarried men, separated married men or widowers
  3. Most of these rapists are either illiterates or dropouts from schools
  4. Most of these rapists are either unemployed vagabonds or unskilled / skilled laborers like drivers, cleaners, daily wage workers etc
  5. These sex criminals usually hail from poor families living in slums
  6. The Rapists plan and execute sexual crimes at their favorite places vulnerable for girls and women
  7. Some of the sex criminals are suspected to be victims of child-abuse in their early lives
  8. Some of the rapists are suspected to be mentally abnormal like being short-tempered, insensitive, cruel, criminal minded etc
                                Risky location

Following are the vulnerable situations and conditions for gang rapes on girls and women:
  1. Girls and women who venture out all alone at late nights and to isolated places may fall prey to these molesters
  2. Girls and women connected to discothèques, and night clubs are more susceptible to  gang rapes, if they commute all alone at late nights, especially on taxies and other public transports
  3. Gangs of sex offences also target romantic couples who find secluded places for their meetings. The goons first threaten the couple, overpower the male partner and then molest the female
  4. Girls and women boarding empty taxis  auto rickshaws, buses or train compartments at nights are also vulnerable to sexual offences committed by vagabonds
                        Rave Parties in India

What the government and society should do to eliminate sexual crimes against girls and women:
  1. The local police should enforce law in such a way that girls and women become safe everywhere and every time, round the clock and no incident of molestation takes place
  2. The police and local administration should attend to the victims, file FIR, arrest the culprits and initiate criminal proceedings immediately against them
  3. The society should develop a healthy social order that people stop treating girls and women as commodities for quenching their lust (हवस)
  4. Girls and women should also follow some code of conduct for ensuring their own safety
  5. Girls and women should not venture out to secluded places in day or night all alone or with a companion.
  6. Girls and women should avoid visiting or working in discotheques or night clubs in nightshifts if they do not have their own mode of transport. They should also avoid attending such programs if they are not in a group of 4-5 friends
  7. Women organizations and overenthusiastic social workers should not criticize  intellectuals and senior citizens, calling them morale police,  who propose security precautions for girls and women
  8. Cheap item numbers, filthy dialogues, rustic songs and erotic exposure of female bodies in films and television definitely pollute people’s attitude towards girls and women. Films and television programs are required to be drastically refined and made much decent
  9. Girls and women have recently started sporting western outfits like hot pants, skintight jeans and tops, thereby exposing cleavages, waistlines, legs and armpits. Indian common men are not used to watch such western avatars of Indian girls and woman
  10. The boys and young men hailing from poor and illiterate families look at the girls and women in western outfits, as if they are item girls of films and TV commercials. That is the reason why they stare at them, stalk them and try to touch them
  11. These vagabonds then set out for locating helpless girls or women after developing perverted sex desire and molest them on the first available opportunity

Product Development-Two Piece Toothbrush: Let Us Design Toothbrush with Replaceable Bristle-Heads on Toothbrush Handle

The one-piece toothbrush now in vogue

© Harish Jharia

The current design of tooth brushes is of an old outdated pattern that might be about half a century old concept. We buy tooth brushes costing between Rs 16/- to Rs 75/- (a few toothbrushes even cost Rs 125+) and discard them after a month as the bristles outlive their lives. The bristles lose their flexibility, become hard and spread outwards. Due to these decays and deformities of bristles, the toothbrushes lose their utility and are thrown away within a month.

We discard our toothbrushes in spite of the fact that only 10% of the product perishes and 90% of the same remains fine and intact. Discarding a toothbrush that is 90% usable is a criminal wastage of the hard-earned money.

I always felt pain while discarding a complete toothbrush even when only its bristles could have been replaced. Frequent discarding of toothbrushes results into disposal problems in India, because, India does not have an organized infrastructure for sorting trash and recycle the same.

This avoidable frequent waste would result into recurring personal losses of the consumers as well as huge collective losses to the national exchequer of individual countries. These losses would eventually go to the extent of billions of dollars if calculated globally. This is because of the fact that hundreds of billions of world population uses millions of tons of toothbrushes and discard them frequently.

Product Development:

Discover Life advises to the toothbrush manufacturers to design two-piece toothbrushes, with durable handles and replaceable bristle heads. Consumers should have the freedom to buy a toothbrush handle on which different bristle-heads could be fitted. They may discard the old bristle-heads after they outlive their lives and replace the same with new ones.

Please do not confuse this product development item with the existing ‘two-piece travel toothbrush’ available in the market

Thereafter, toothbrush handles and bristle-heads would be sold separately in the market and the consumers will have freedom to select each part of the toothbrush of their own choice.

Product Standardization:

Toothbrush handle and bristle-heads will have to be globally standardized so that the consumer can buy bristle-heads of their choice from anywhere and fix the same on their toothbrush handle.

Crazy ideas: How to wipe body after bath without slipping our palms over towel

Towel wipes the body with ease in the beginning

© Harish Jharia

Wiping body with towel is a daily routine; yet, there a couple of effective ways of using the towel, that we do not know or miss to follow. We just manage to wipe our body with a towel as fast as possible and come out of the bathroom in fresh air.

I always wonder about the behavior of my towel whenever I wipe my body after bath. The towel wipes the body with ease in the beginning. But, thereafter it starts sticking to the skin, my palms slip over it and I have to clutch the towel with my fingers to move it over the surface of my body.

In fact in the beginning of the wiping process our skin and palms both are equally moist after the bath. But the palms get dry by the time we finish wiping our head, hands and torso. And when we wipe our lower half of our body, especially legs… the palms get completely dried by then; whereas the skin of our legs remains profusely wet. Resultantly, the towel sticks to the skin and we need to clutch the towel and rub it on the legs.

Solution:

Before starting wiping our legs… we should move our palms on the wet surface of our remaining body and drench our palms. We may even drench your palms with tap water available in the bathroom.

Eventually, we would be able to wipe the wet body with towel without slipping our palms or clutching the towel with fingers.

Mothers might have faced the same problems while wiping their children’s wet bodies with dry hands. They may also drench their hands before this.

Men’s Health and Cosmetic Look: Excess Growth of Hair on Eyebrows, Ear and nostrils Especially on Senior Citizens

                                   Nasal hair

 © Harish Jharia

Men grow hair in their nostrils and on their external ears, in addition to their facial hair. Their mustaches and beard start growing at their puberty; whereas their ear and nostrils grow hairs in their late thirties. Nasal and external ear hairs result in ugly facial look in man rather than serving any practical utility.

These hairs grow more in the case of senior citizens. I have seen many elderly people, including some celebrities, sporting outwardly shooting ear-hair with pride. Many elderly people move around carelessly with nasal hair protruding out of their nostrils. But in general these hairs are not considered good for facial looks of men and most of the people get rid of them by one way or the other.

                    Hair on external ear

There are following three type of ugly facial hair found in men especially in their later age:
  1. Excess growth of hair on eyebrows: Additional thicker, harder and longer hair use to sprout out on the eyebrows of men in their late thirties. These hairs grow more in their post fifty ages when men reach their senior citizen stage. These hairs give scary look and should be trimmed regularly.
  2. Excess growth of hair in nostrils: Additional thicker, harder and longer hair use to sprout out of the nostrils of men in their late thirties. These hairs grow more in their post fifty ages when men reach their senior citizen stage. These hairs give filthy and scary look and should be trimmed regularly. Nasal hair also affect the day-to-day life of men as the sufferers feel itching sensation when the thick bunches of hair touch the inner sensitive surface of nostrils. They also sneeze when the pointed ends of thick and hard hairs pinch the walls of nostrils. Such people usually develop habits of touching their noses frequently and sometimes insert fingers in nostrils.
  3. Excess growth of hair on external ears: Additional use to grow out on the external ears of men in their late thirties. These hairs grow more in their post fifty ages when men reach their senior citizen stage. These hairs give ugly look and should be trimmed regularly.
1.5 volt AA battery operated Hair Trimmer

These hairs can be trimmed with the help of small scissors or you can rather go for electric trimmers available in the market. Almost all of these trimmers work on 1.5 volt AA batteries. They are handy and can be operated singlehandedly, easily and safely. With the help of these trimmers, you can completely cutoff hair from your nostrils and from the external ears. The hair sprouted out from your eyebrows will have to be trimmed and brought to the length of the normal hair of the eyebrows.

This grooming exercise will have to be performed at least twice a month regularly.

Crazy Ideas: How To Stop Soap / Shampoo From Running Into Eyes While Taking Bath?

© Harish Jharia

We usually take quick showers by following a stereo type sequence of stages during our bath. Most of us do just like that, because we have a misconception that taking bath is a time consuming process.

We stand under the showers, drench ourselves, apply soap all over our body, and wash the body with another shower. And we are done.

Nevertheless, in the hasty bathing we keep our eyes clinched throughout the process of applying soap / shampoo all over the body / head. After applying soap / shampoo , we keep our eyes closed in order to protect them against running soap-water into them. Thereafter, we move around blindfold searching for the shower knob.

Eyebrows- natural  barriers for water flowing down forehead

Question: How To Stop Soap / shampoo From Running Into Eyes While Taking Bath?

Answer: We need not go blindfold during showers.  Just follow the following steps and keep your eyes open while applying soap / shampoo and reaching out for the shower-knob:
  1. After your first shower and before applying soap on head and body, squeeze out water from your hair with the help of your palms / hands.
  2. Squeeze out water from your eyebrows with the help of index fingers of both of your hands. Your eyebrows are the natural reservoirs for the water / liquid flowing through your forehead.
  3. By squeezing out water from hair on your head and eyebrows, firstly there would be negligible quantity of water left for flowing into your eyes.
  4. Secondly, whatever marginal quantity of water flows down the forehead that would be absorbed and contained within your eyebrows.
  5. Eventually, possibilities of entering soap-water in your eyes would be reduced to the minimal.
By following the above precautions we may take bath keeping our eyes open throughout the entire process of our bath.

Crazy Ideas: How to Identify Cosmetics, Without Glasses, While Taking Shower

Photo clicked on Nokia N8, 12 MPix Mobile

People with glasses usually do not have problems in their day-to-day chores and activities as long as they keep their glasses on. But we have to remove our glasses in our bathrooms while taking bath, especially when we shampoo our hair and apply conditioner.

Conditioners and shampoos usually have identical tubes and are hard to be identified without spectacles. If you use glasses and are not able to differentiate between shampoo and conditioner, then just write ‘S’ for Shampoo and ‘C’ for Conditioner, on the tube, in  big bold letters with the help of a permanent marker pen.

Have a look at the big bold ‘S’ and ‘C’ in the illustration that can be easily resolved without glasses.

Crazy Ideas: Resource Conservation: How to Utilize the Leftovers of Bath-Soaps:

Ashburn, Virginia, USA

©Harish Jharia

With the introduction of international branded soaps in India my family also tried some of these brands at our home. We found them really useful and effective as far as skin care and cleaning is concerned. But the main hitch was the prize of these brands.

We came across ‘Dove’ bath-soap in the year 2003 in one of the shops in Paltan Bazar at Dehradun. I was shocked to learn about its price tag of Rs 40/- as compare to the 100 gram Indian bath-soaps available on the same shop within the range of Rs 12/- to 20/-. The prize difference at the ratio of 12:40 between these soaps still continues till today.

Now let us discuss about the leftovers of the bath-soaps that are usually drained out in the commode or are used for hand-wash

Some people just throw these leftover soaps in the dustbin. Nevertheless, I just could not afford to throw the leftovers of the bath-soaps worth Rs 70/- to Rs 80/- a piece. I, instead, use to attach the leftovers of previous bath-soaps to the fresh pieces (using molecular adhesion process) and use the coupled soap cakes for bathing.

For sticking the leftovers to a fresh soap cake you may follow this process:
  1. Use the fresh soap cake for two baths, so that the smoothness of its surface goes
  2. Keep the leftover bath-soap under the shower while you take bath, so that it becomes soft
  3. Place the leftover on the bath-soap over the soft wet bath-soap and ring one against the other, so that any air-bubble or water forces out
  4. Leave them stuck-together overnight and you will find that both the pieces of soaps integrated as one single piece
Look at the following images of the process in successive stages:

            Fresh soap and leftover soap

Put wet leftover on the new wet soap and ring them

Soap attached with leftover is ready to use

Crazy Ideas: How to Enhance Good Looking Features Without Cosmetics

- Harish Jharia

Ashburn, Virginia, USA
We usually go searching for different cosmetics and even resort to cosmetic surgery for becoming beautiful, handsome, charming or pretty. There are thousands of cosmetics available across counters claiming to enhance your good looks and make heads turn towards your face. There are many beauty parlors mushrooming in our neighborhood streets and shopping centers, attracting most of the women and girls from our homes.

We always roam around outdoors and go for artificial rectification of our face, rather than using our inner features for making our face charming. Yes the natural feature is our smile that we keep hiding most of the time.

You may try for yourself. Just take two pictures of yourself, one with normal face and the other with smiling face, preferably with your front teeth partly visible.  You will find yourself better looking with smiling face compared to with non-smiling face

Winter Care Tips For Healthy, Soft and Smooth Skin:

Photobucket

©Harish Jharia

The environment becomes dry during winters and so will be the condition of our skin. People, with dry and oily skin are equally affected adversely in the dehydrated cold weather.  In winters our skin becomes dry, rough and hard as the moisture and the natural oil that the skin needs goes scarce under the chilling temperature. Our skin might even develop cracks if proper care is not taken and adequate moisture and supplements for the natural oil are not provided for keeping the skin soft, smooth and healthy. Some specific portions of our body like the lower back are more susceptible for drying fast.

Children are usually found scratching these portions of their bodies as the skin becomes dry and might even develop scaling of dead cells. Scratching of skin might also develop infection and inflammation if the skin is damaged and left unprotected and unattended.

Keeping the above in mind we should firstly stop the activities that might take away the moisture and natural oil from our body and secondly we should provide adequate moisture and supplements to our skin for keeping it healthy, soft and smooth. The following tips may help you in keeping your skin in good shape and condition in the chilly weather during winters:
  1. Maintain the humidity of your house at a proper level by using humidifiers. You may also keep broad trays filled with water in each room.
  2. I tried spreading wet towels in my rooms in absence of humidifiers and found that they helped in maintaining good level of humidity indoors.
  3. Keep the major portion of your body covered as the exposed area of our skin loses moisture when it comes in contact with the dry air outdoors.
  4. We should take bath every day, preferably tub-baths as the skin of our body will absorb moisture during the process of bathing.
  5. We should remember that skipping bath will result in missing a vital process of moisturizing our body in addition to cleansing and conditioning it.
  6. We should apply body lotion, olive oil, coconut oil or any other vegetable oil, immediately after the bath, all over your body, except our face, before the skin dries completely.
  7. We need not apply soap or body wash all over our body daily in winters as we do not sweat in this weather as we do in summers.
  8. We need to apply soap on the exposed portions susceptible for deposition of filth or those that might develop body odor
  9. We should apply moisturizer or cold cream on our face immediately after our bath and may repeat it as and when we clean or wash it. The cosmetics may be selected depending on the atmospheric temperature and relative humidity RH of the place we live.
  10. Body lotions should be kept handy during winters for applying on our hands as and when we wash them.
  11. We need to take comparatively more and intense care if we live in the places where there is snow-fall and the temperature goes down to subzero level.
  12. We need to relax our dieting restrictions during winters for supplementing the losses of vital body oils and moisture. We should take balanced diet inclusive of proteins, carbohydrates, fibers, fruits, eggs, fish, butter, milk and plenty of salads in our day-to-day diet.

Workout, Morning Walk, Jog: Speed, Resistance or Time Period? Do It At Least For Half An Hour…

Workout, Morning Walk, Jog:Speed, Resistance or Time Period? Do It At Least For Half An Hour…

While doing workout in gyms or on a morning walk or jog we usually do heavy exercises or do it faster with an aim to burn more calories. This concept is not correct. It is not going to help you to keep fit if you rum fast for 5 minutes or if you workout harder for 5 to 10 times. By doing so we just do not do any exercise; on the other hand we only exert load on our body and do a harder work for a short time. This is not an ideal workout or exercise.

We need to do the following for an effective workout:
  1. Our heartbeats should increase
  2. Our breath should go deeper and faster
  3. We should drench with sweat in summers
For achieving all the above goals we will have to work out at constant speed for at least 30 minutes to 45 minutes. How hard should you workout or how fast you would run or walk will depend on your age, physique and health. We should select the speed and resistance at which we can do the workout for a period between 30min to 45min.

In a simple language we may say that we should walk, run or workout at least for 30 minutes and preferably for 45 minutes with a moderated strenuous level suiting to our age and health.

We should remember that if we are suffering from heart ailments, lungs infection or problems like asthma then also we should go for morning walks while following certain guidelines provided by our doctor.

Crazy Ideas: Exercise and workout are not luxuries:

© Harish Jharia

A young woman asked her health expert to tell her the easiest ways to keep trim, fit and healthy. She was caught unawares when the expert advised her to remove her house maid and do the ‘jhadoo – pochha’ (sweeping and wiping the floors of her house) in her place. Nevertheless, the guru smiled and continued that he did not mean that. He was rather trying to convey that the people who are active and do hard work, are by default fit and healthy. They do not even suffer from obesity, diabetes and hypertension

We usually try to copy the film and showbiz celebrities who have their own private gyms and health instructors employed for them. They do workouts and various exercises for shaping their bodies and forming muscles rather than doing it for keeping fit and healthy.

We as common people should go for workout that needs no appliances and employees like instructors. Exercising is not a luxury. It is rather a struggle where you need to drench in sweat, accelerate your heart beats and go breathless. Just go to the nearest jogger’s park at 6am and run for 30 – 45 minutes and that is all. I am sure that you will keep fit, trim and healthy.
