Udaipur’s famous Kalbelia Dancer Rekha killed by her obsessed lover

Video: Kalbelia dancer Rekha performing in Udaipur

- Harish Jharia

Jodhpur, 1 February 2014,

We recently had a pleasure trip to Udipur. It was a memorable experience of our life. Our 3 day stay at Hotel Taj Lake Palace was a real unforgettable part of our trip. The hospitality extended by the hotel staff was exceptionally good and flawless. We also witnessed a folk-dance performance by a Kalbelia dancer Rekha. Rekha’s dancing talents, expressions, postures and features were unbelievably decent and beautiful. I simply wondered how a tribal girl could perform with such a grandeur without any professional choreographer’s help and Hi-Tech automated mechanizes stage and gadgets.

We had a shock of the day when we read the front page news in a newspaper about brutal murder of the Kalbelia dancer Rekha. It is reported that she was stabbed by a young man on Thursday the 30th Jan2014.

Rekha was one of the best dancers in in this area of Rajasthan. She had been regularly giving her performance at this hotel and performed internationally in the US, France, Russia, Canada, Oman and Italy.

Rekha’s elder brother Sheranath reportedly said that, she was the youngest of 4 siblings and was the most talented among them. In a very short lifespan, Rekha had performed in many other countries. Her last overseas performance was in Muscat, Oman on 8th Jan 2014 and she was scheduled to perform in Milan on 8th March 2014, he said.

What is the difference between Cheese (चीज़) and Paneer (पनीर)

- Harish Jharia

Cheese and Paneer are almost similar dairy products but quite different in taste, texture and other characteristics. The processes of preparation of cheese and paneer are also different. Paneer’s preparation is quite simple and it can be done at home with the tools and ingredients available in domestic kitchens; whereas, the preparation of cheese is a bit complex and needs specific tools, ingredients and expertize for making it.

How is Paneer made:

For making paneer out of 1 litre of milk, you need 3-4 spoonful of lemon juice, muslin cloth, strainer, and two- 2 litre cooking utensils (पतीले).

Heat the milk in a cooking utensil, until it reaches its boiling point. Put off the fire and add 1 spoonful of lemon juice at a time and keep stirring the milk constantly. Add 2nd and 3rd spoonful of lemon juice at reasonable gaps and keep stirring the hot milk until the milk disintegrates into curds and whey (दूध का पानी).

Now, put the strainer on another utensil; spread muslin cloth on it and pour the disintegrated milk over it, straining out the whey into the utensil. Keep aside the whey and preserve it for future use in place of lemon juice.

Then rinse the curds thoroughly with fresh water. Remove the curds along with the muslin cloth and wrap the cloth around the curds tightly into a desired shape and keep it pressed under a weight of approximately 2kg for 3 hours. Remove the weight when all the whey squeezes out and the curds become firm and solid. Finally, soak the block of curds in ice water for 5 minute and remove the paneer from the cloth.

How is Cheese made:

There are many types of cheese and are prepared with as many methods. Although, cheese in its most basic form involves curdling milk and then separating the solids from the whey, some cheeses undergo additional steps and need more time for preparation. The variety of cheese, the taste, texture, color, and aroma depends on what process it goes through thereafter.

1. Curdling:
Curdling (जमाना) milk is the first step for separating the milk solids from the liquid including whey protein and water. The milk is curdled by adding an enzyme (fermenter) such as rennet (जामन).

Rennet is the oldest method of curdling milk as it is found in the stomach linings of ruminants (जुगाली करने वाले जानवर). Rennet is an enzyme that denatures the proteins in milk and forming curds (छैना). Curds formed with rennet have a gel-like consistency that allows them to be stretched and molded unlike curds formed as paneer. Cheeses with good melting qualities, such as mozzarella, are produced with rennet. Nowadays, rennet is produced in bulk by genetically modifying bacteria to produce the required enzyme. This allows for an unlimited amount of rennet to be produced at a much lower price.

2. Processing:
  1. After curds are separated from the whey, they undergo processing eventually producing distinct varieties of cheese sold in the market.
  2. Many cheeses are heated and salted for further squeezing out more moisture. The more moisture squeezed out of the curd, the harder would be the cheese. This also allows the longevity of cheese, when the salt will provide extra flavor.
  3. Some cheeses such as mozzarella undergo stretching process for aligning the proteins and developing fibers giving the cheese a stringy texture.
  4. Milder cheeses, such as Colby or Gouda are passed through several washings for reducing its acidity and proving mild and creamy flavor to shine through.
3. Ripening:
Ripening or aging process is applied to provide much different flavors for specific varieties of cheese. Cheese is stored under controlled environmental conditions in order to let natural microbes to transform proteins and other constituents into various highly flavored compounds. Many cheeses are applied with specific bacteria for producing desired flavor, color and texture.

Gasses generated by bacteria in Swiss cheese get entrapped within the cheese and create the classic bubble texture. The distinct blue veining in blue cheese is also created by bacteria that get inoculated in the cheese.

Happy Krishna Janmaashtami
Lord Krishna's Birthday

Today is the birthday of Lord Krishna. His colorful birthday is celebrated with all the fanfare, music dance and chanting songs in His honor.

Lord Krishna is believed to have been born in 3112 BCE; therefore today, it is the 5125th birthday of Lord Krishna.  Lord Krishna has the rare distinction of being India’s most beloved divinity and at the same time a historical figure, who existed physically on this planet about 5000 years ago.

Lord Krishna was a philosopher, warrior, and ruler and was eventually elevated to the highest level of sacred divinity- a God.

I on behalf of ‘Discover Life’ and on my own behalf, wish all the devotees of Lord Krishna a very happy Krishna Janmashami…

Jai Shri Krishna….

Kedarnath Temple - a victim of human encroachment and abuse

------------------------------------------------------
Have you ever wondered what was the government doing when thousands of pilgrims died at Kedarnath Shrine? What was the real reason for the abrupt devastation of the villages and carnage of human lives? Here are the answers for your questions on this natural disaster failure of government, in this article.
------------------------------------------------------

             The devastated Kedarnath shrine

- Harish Jharia

The Kedarnath Temple is located at a height of 3,583 m (11,755 ft), situated at 223 km from Rishikesh and is believed to be constructed on the shores of Mandakini River, a tributary of Ganges. Mandakini River has since changed its course and currently the temple is practically standing in the middle of the riverbed. The riverbed is situated at the bottom of huge valley with high mountains and a glacier at its sides. It received mammoth amount of water and silt as a result of prolonged heavy rains and melting of glacier snow, flowing along the huge mountain slopes.

            Kedarnath temple 150 years back

Because of the above mentioned geographical conditions in the valley, the river might be flowing 6 to 10 foot deep in the rainy seasons. That might be the reason that the architects and builders of Kedarnath temple constructed it at a 15 to 20 foot high solid platform from the riverbed level. The plinth height of the temple is clearly visible in the photograph taken approximately 50 years back somewhere around 1950-60.

        Kedarnath temple 50 years back

Kedarnath temple is an impressive stone structure constructed at some unknown period.  Some schools of thoughts believe that the structure was constructed in the 8th Century AD, when Adi Shankara visited this place. Some other scholars think that the Kedarnath temple was built by the Pandavas in Mahabharata period.

               Kedarnath temple before floods

Whosoever might have built the temple, but it is sure that it was definitely built exclusively for religious purpose. It was not built for tourism and with commercial motives.

              Kedarnath temple after floods

Let us list out the ways Uttarakhand people, its governments and the governments of the erstwhile Uttar Pradesh of which Uttarakhand was a part, kept exploiting the Hindu religious shrine that ended up in the recent disaster and human massacre:
  1. The Kedarnath shrine was left unattended and left free-for-all to buy land around the temple and construct various structures, making the shrine a crowded place.
  2. All types of commercial activities were permitted in the structures constructed around the temple making it a market place.
  3. No free space was left around the temple and the buildings were constructed in close proximity of the temple, thereby, reducing the dominance of the highest seat of Hindu religion.
  4. The roads leading to the Kedarnath shrine were unprotected as there was no proper reinforcement provided at the edges and along the slopes down to the deep valleys.
  5. Even sufficient margins were not left between the road and the deadly edges of valleys for safety against falling of commuting vehicles and damages to the road due to landslides at the edges.
  6. The houses, shops, hotels and dharmshalas of Kedarnath town were built right at the edges of the river banks and that of the valleys making them vulnerable to devastation due to floods and landslides.
  7. No stone or concrete structures were built around Kedarnath temple that could have diverted the flow of water, stones, pebbles and rubbles away from the temple structure.
  8. The height of the base platform (15’ to 20’), on which the temple was built, had not been maintained through the last known 150 years. Resultantly, tons of silt was allowed to deposit on the earth / riverbed elevating its height almost equal to the base platform of Kedarnath temple.

Global Terrorism: David Headley (Daood Gilani) a Pakistani American Sentenced To 35 Year Imprisonment by US Court

Tahawwur Rana and David Headley (Daood Gilani)

Jan 24, 2013

The Pakistani American and Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist David Headley (Daood Gilani) was sentenced to 35 years in jail by a US court on Thursday. He has been sentenced for 35 year imprisonment for actively participating and guiding the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. Headley (Daood Gilani) has been ordered to serve 35 years in jail, followed by five years of supervised release.

David Headley (Daood Gilani) escaped the well-deserved death penalty because of his deal with the US government for sharing secret information about another terrorist and his childhood friend Tahawwur Rana. The US attorneys argued that while there is no question that Headley's criminal conduct was deplorable, his decision to cooperate with the legal process had provided significant support to the US government's efforts to combat global terrorism.

David Headley’s (Daood Gilani) testimony helped to grab his associate Tahawwur Rana who was recently sentenced with 14 year imprisonment for providing material support to overseas terrorism, including the Pakistani terrorists group of 10, whose 2008 attacks in Mumbai, left 160 plus people dead and devastate properties worth millions of dollars.

In the late 2005, Headley received orders from three leaders of Lashkar-e-Taiba to travel India and conduct extensive and prolonged surveillance in order to plan and implement the proposed terror attacks at denoted Indian spots.  David Headley (Daood Gilani) did such exploration projects for five consecutive times eventually leading to the ghastly Mumbai terror attacks in 2008, killing 166 plus people, including six Americans and wounded hundreds.

Headley has confessed, during the hearing, that he had undergone numerous surveillance missions in India for his Pakistani bosses. His criminal activities included videographing various targets in India, including the iconic Taj hotel in Mumbai. These were the spots eventually attacked by the 10 Pakistani Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists. David Headley’s (Daood Gilani) also admitted that he had attended five different dedicated terror training camps in Pakistan, operated by Lashkar-e-Taiba, between 2002 and 2005.

"Headley is a terrorist" the Judge pronounced while imposing the sentence on 12 different criminal counts in a packed court room. The judge also stressed on the fact that "He commits crime, cooperates and then gets rewarded for the cooperation”.

Justice Verma Panel Recommends Many Tougher Penalties for Sex Crimes in India: A Review

© Harish Jharia

Justice Verma Committee’s recommendations about Comprehensive changes in criminal laws as published in the press:

New offences have been specified and stiffer punishments have been suggested for rapists who rape and render the victim to a vegetative state. These crimes include disrobing a woman स्त्री को नग्न करना, voyeurism छिप कर देखना, stalking पीछा करना and trafficking नारी तस्करी. Sexual misconduct also includes intentional touching, spoken words and gestures made as sexual advances. The present law provides for punishment to rapists’ imprisonment ranging from seven years to life in jail. For the first time, the minimum punishment as recommended by the committee is raised to 20 years in some cases.
Our comment: The recommendation is welcome.

The demand for reducing the age bar for juvenile offenders has not found favor with the Justice J S Verma panel, which has cited the Convention on Rights of Child that disagrees with capital punishment or life sentence for those below 18 years, as well as the "neurological state of the adolescent brain" to support its view. "We are of the view that the material before us is sufficient to reach the conclusion that the age of juveniles ought not to be reduced to 16 years.
"Our comment: We do not agree with the recommendation. Men and women of 17 years cannot be called ‘children’ because, biologically, they attain puberty around 12 to 13 years. Eventually, they become capable of sexual reproduction at around 17 years of age. Therefore, the men and women of 17 years of age do not deserve protection specified for children, because they themselves are capable of reproducing children. There are millions of 17 year old parents in the world having children reproduced by them.

"Neurological state of the adolescent brain" is a vague argument and needs fresh and thorough study by physiologists and medical scientists. The committee also negotiated various areas, seeking disqualification of MPs and MLAs charged with heinous crimes like rape. They also suggested measures to check Khap Panchayats and trial security forces personnel under general criminal laws rather than trying them under Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA).
Our comment: The recommendation is welcome.

Addressing a press conference, Justice Verma came down heavily on Union home secretary RK Singh for appreciating the role of  Delhi Police commissioner after the Delhi gang rape, instead of coming out with an apology. The committee also condemned Delhi Police for the lathicharge on young demonstrators in the capital after the heinous crime, which it said had scarred the image of Indian democracy.
Our comment: The recommendation is welcome.

Releasing the report, Justice Verma told a news conference that the committee has not suggested death penalty for rapist because there was overwhelming suggestions from the women organizations against it. The committee did not recommend death penalty for rape because it was a "regressive step" and it "may not have a deterrent effect"."We have not recommended death penalty as we had overwhelming suggestions against it. The women groups unanimously were against death penalty and that is why we thought that is a strong reason to respect that view particularly in view of the modern trend also," Justice Verma said.
Our comment: We do not agree with the recommendation. The suggestions from women organizations and human rights activists appear to be biased and prejudiced with the age-old cultural intolerance and humanitarian diktats. There should have been strong recommendations from Verma committee for death sentence in case of rape followed by the death / murder of the victim.

The committee recommended various amendments to various laws and enhancement of punishments to the offenders. Nevertheless, it is concluded that the existing laws, if faithfully and effectively implemented by trustworthy law enforcement agencies, would be adequate to protect the well-being and dignity of people particularly the modesty of women. The committee also said speedy justice was necessary for right to life with dignity and recommended that systemic changes would reduce the burden of pending cases in courts. The vacancies of judges should be filled by new recruitment or by ad-hock appointments. In addition to that, new vacancies of judges should be created, in order to increase number of courts for hearing pending cases.
Our comment: The recommendation is welcome.

Taking note of the brutality committed in the Delhi gang-rape incident, the committee suggested replacement of Section 375 defining rape by defining specific unnatural acts.
Our comment: No comment offered, as the recommendation is not understood in absence of details.

Deliberate touching the body of women will constitute the offence of sexual assault for which punishment will be a maximum of five years rigorous imprisonment or fine or both.
Our comment: The recommendation is welcome.

Use of words, gestures against women, which create unwelcome threats of sexual nature or advances, would invite a maximum punishment of one year imprisonment or fine or both. Our comment: The recommendation is welcome. Causing grievous hurt through throwing acid on women shall also be punished with rigorous imprisonment for not less than 10 years but could go up-to life. Our comment: The recommendation is welcome.
The following points appear to be missing in the recommendations published in the press?

What specific punishments are recommended for the rapists who sexually molest innocent children and mentally retarded girls and women who do not know as to what all goes on with them during molestation? Recommendation about this aspect has not been published in the press.

What punishments are recommended for sexual molestation of small boys and mentally retarded male victims? Recommendation about this aspect has not been published in the press.

Crazy Ideas: Makar Sankranti Is Based On Global Scientific Astrology And Not Merely A Hindu Festival …

© Harish Jharia

Makar Sankranti is also called 'Uttaraayan' उत्तरायण in Gujraat, India; because, 14th January is the day after which the path of Sun shifts from southern sky to Northern sky that is from Dakshinaayan दक्षिणायन to Uttaraayan उत्तरायण...

Makar Sankranti is apparently the only Hindu festival that always falls on the same day every year on 14th January. Hindu festivals are basically calculated according to Indian Panchangas (पंचांग) that are based on Indian lunar calendar. On the other hand the internationally followed Christian calendar is based on western solar astrology. As a result of the difference between the movements of Earth and Moon vis-à-vis the ceaseless changing position of Sun in the sky, the Hindu festivals never fall on the same day of the Christian calendar, every year, with an exception of ‘Makar Sankranti’.

Editor's Page: Fake Prediction for End of the World on 21 December 2012 Proved Absolutely False

The doomsday or holocaust on 21 December proved fake

Friday, December 21, 2012; New Delhi, India

Today is 21 December 2012 and the sun has already risen in Australia and Asia.  The sun is going to rise in Europe and America in a few hours and declare the holocaust date of 21 December 2012. I am sure nothing bad or good is going to happen in the world just because of the Mayan prediction of the dooms day.

Now we should stop believing on any sorts of predictions based on any ancient or modern astrology; because, predictions for future happenings are not possible in the least.
