Udaipur’s famous Kalbelia Dancer Rekha killed by her obsessed lover

Video: Kalbelia dancer Rekha performing in Udaipur

- Harish Jharia

Jodhpur, 1 February 2014,

We recently had a pleasure trip to Udipur. It was a memorable experience of our life. Our 3 day stay at Hotel Taj Lake Palace was a real unforgettable part of our trip. The hospitality extended by the hotel staff was exceptionally good and flawless. We also witnessed a folk-dance performance by a Kalbelia dancer Rekha. Rekha’s dancing talents, expressions, postures and features were unbelievably decent and beautiful. I simply wondered how a tribal girl could perform with such a grandeur without any professional choreographer’s help and Hi-Tech automated mechanizes stage and gadgets.

We had a shock of the day when we read the front page news in a newspaper about brutal murder of the Kalbelia dancer Rekha. It is reported that she was stabbed by a young man on Thursday the 30th Jan2014.

Rekha was one of the best dancers in in this area of Rajasthan. She had been regularly giving her performance at this hotel and performed internationally in the US, France, Russia, Canada, Oman and Italy.

Rekha’s elder brother Sheranath reportedly said that, she was the youngest of 4 siblings and was the most talented among them. In a very short lifespan, Rekha had performed in many other countries. Her last overseas performance was in Muscat, Oman on 8th Jan 2014 and she was scheduled to perform in Milan on 8th March 2014, he said.

Addicted Rapist-Killer Rapes and Kills another 9 Year Girl In Shirdi After Having Released From Jail

 © Harish Jharia

Sunil alias Pappu Suresh Salve, 32 kidnapped a 9 year old girl on December 28 2012. He raped and killed the girl near Sainagar railway station in Shirdi and subsequently buried her body in earth. The police unearthed the girl's body after his arrest on 4 January 2013 for conducting postmortem and and initiating criminal case against Salve.

The 32-year-old rapist and killer was acquitted last year by a higher court from charges of rape and murder of a nine-year-old girl at Sinnar in Nashik district in 2003. He was again arrested on Friday for committing a similar crime.  The rapist and killer, Sunil alias Pappu Suresh Salve, was arrested in 2002 for committing three more similar crimes.

In the 2003 Sinnar case, Salve, who is from Nashik, was awarded death sentence by Nashik district court. Nevertheless , he was subsequently acquitted of his alleged crimes by a higher court. After completing his sentence in earlier cases he was released from Nashik central jail on May 28, 2012 after which he committed the latest similar crime.

After the gruesome gang rape and heinous massacre of a 23 year girl in Delhi, many rape and murder cases are coming to light every day. It appears as if Indian cities, town and villages are apparently unsafe for girls and women.  The most shameful aspect of this scenario is that little girls in the age group between 3 years to 13 years are most affected.

The following points come to our mind on giving serious thinking to this inhuman, cruel and barbaric attitude of us Indians towards our children:
  1. A 30 year married man, who lives in the holy city of Shirdi, selling religious pictures in the shrine, cannot be trusted against child abuses, rapes and murders of small girls.
  2. Maharashtra Navnirman Sena MNS’s allegation that immigrants from northern states like Bihar are indulged in such sex-crimes is absolutely wrong, because, Sunil alias Pappu Suresh Salve is initially a native of Maharashtra.
  3. Such sex crimes are more likely to be committed by natives of the particular place.
  4. Migrants from other villages, towns, cities, metros or states cannot dare to commit such sex crimes in strange places.
  5. Usually joint-family members, relatives, family-friends and neighbors are more likely to commit such sex crimes.
  6. 3 to 13 year girls are the main victims of the rapists cum killers because these girls are soft targets that are easily accessible.
  7. Small girls obviously do not know anything about whatever is done to them by the rapist until they feel hurt and pained physically.
  8. Small girls can be easily lured by offering eatables or with emotional blackmail.
The following precautionary measure may be taken to avoid cases of child-abuse and such sex-crimes against small children:
  1. Keep your children in front of your eyes as long as possible.
  2. Do not let any outsider develop proximity with your children especially girls.
  3. Never leave your children unattended or alone in your house or out there on the streets.
  4. Instruct your children not to let anybody touch their body.
  5. Children should know that the most forbidden portion of their bodies is between their knees and shoulders.
  6. The children should shout in their highest pitch if someone attempts to touch or fiddle with the above forbidden portion of their bodies.
  7. Children should never hide anything abnormal, happened in their day-to-day lives from their parents,.
  8. Children should not develop friendship with anybody older than them in age or built.
  9. Children should inform their parents immediately if someone starts taking extra interest in them.
  10. Parents should never leave their children under the care of servants, neighbors, relatives or babysitters.
  11. Parents should be careful in selecting dresses for their small girls.
  12. Children should not wear dresses designed like film stars, models and stage performers.
  13. Women activists should not make hue-and-cry if social thinkers advise girls to dress up in decent outfits.
  14. Women activists should stop unilateral onslaughts against men and society and at the same time rubbishing every single reformatory advice suggested for girls and women.
  15. We will have to bring overall reformatory changes in civic life and governance with an open mine and without any bias and prejudice in order to stop child-abuse, rapes and killings of girls.

The Biggest Festival of Hindus Diwali: Celebrating Victory of Good over Evil

© Harish Jharia

Diwali is the festival of light that is celebrated to mark the victory of Lord Ram over the demon king Ravan and his return to Ayodhya after a fourteen year eviction वनवास.  This is also celebrated as the festival of wealth and prosperity and Goddess Lakshmi is worshiped on this occasion. The traditional Indian business communities observe Diwali as their commercial New Year and the beginning of their financial year.  Their ledgers खाता-बही are also written accordingly and the Balance Sheet prepared on the Diwali day.

Diwali दीवाली, also called Deepavali दीपावली, is unequivocally the most important and biggest festival of Hindus. Diwali is celebrated on the ‘Kaartik Amavasya’ कार्तिक अमावस्या… that is the New Moon day of Kartik month of Hindu calendar. This is the 15th day of the dark fortnight (कृष्ण-पक्ष) of Kartik month.

This is the 2069th year of the Vikram Calendar, initiated after the name of the famous ancient emperor Vikamaditya, which is followed by most of the Hindus of central and northern India.

Diwali falls in the months of October and November alternately year after year on different dates of Christian calendar.  The basic reason for this error is that the Vikram Calendar and the Christian calendar are based on different astronomy that are lunar and
solar constellations respectively.

The only Hindu festival that falls on the same date of the Christian calendar is ‘Makar Sankranti’ that always falls on 14th January every year. Read more in the article “Why Makar Sankranti (Hindu Solstice) always falls on 14th January...?”

The story behind Diwali:

Diwali is believed to be celebrated to mark the victory of Lord Ram over the demon king of Lanka- Ravan. Lord Ram, the king of Ayodhya was dethroned from his kingdom out of a family dispute and expelled to live a tribal life in the wilds. Lord Ram, along with his wife Goddess Sita and brother Lakshman, left behind the royal life and set off for a fourteen year sojourn in the deep forests.

One fine morning the demon king Ravan, in the guise of a sadhu, intruded the secured territory of lord Ram’s wild residence when Goddess Sita was all alone in the camp. Ravan begged to her for alms in the guise of a sadhu and motivated she to step-out across the secured barrier (लक्ष्मण रेखा) laid around the residential structure by Lakshman.

The moment Goddess Sita stepped-out of her secured barrier, Ravan immediately abducted her.  He carried her on his miraculous flying machine ‘Pushpak Viman’ पुष्पक विमान and flew to his island Kingdom Lanka. He eventually put the godess under solitary confinement in his royal gardens.

Ravan was also involved in many other criminal and inhuman activities and atrocities against innocent sadhus, yogis, devotees of God and tribal kings and their subjects. Lord Ram, who was believed to have appeared in human incarnation for eliminating evil forces, wedged an open war against the demon king. He established diplomatic treaties with all the tribal kings and with their help recruited a huge army of tribal people and predators. Lord Ram eventually conquered over the mighty and wealthy demon king Ravan after his assassination.

After winning the prolonged war of Lanka and the at the end of the fourteen year eviction, Lord Ram returned to his motherland Ayodhya along with Goddess Sita and Lakshman. It is believed that the royal family and the people of Ayodhya decorated their houses with glowing lamps and celebrated the arrival of the lord with songs, dances and loud beats of drums.

The day of the return of Lord Ram was ‘Kaartik Amavasya’ कार्तिक अमावस्या and thereafter Hindus adaped this day as their biggest festival and named it as Diwali दिवाली or Deepawali दीपावली.

Audio Message of Rajesh Khanna: Rajesh Khanna left a recorded farewell message for fans ‎

Superstar Rajesh Khanna Is No More: He Leaves Behind a Recorded Message for His Admirers

- Harish Jharia

Here is the brief, edited and compiled transcript of the historic message recorded by Rajesh Khanna, somewhere before he breathed his last....
This recording was first played at the time of his ‘chouth’ (4th day after death) and released to the media, by his family members for the visitors who visited them for offering their last respect to the departed soul:

President of India Election 2012: Who will be the next Indian President… Abdul Kalam or Pranab Mukherjee?

© Harish Jharia

The President of India is the first citizen of the country. This position also has the distinctive power of being the supreme commander of the Indian armed forces. Nevertheless, the president is the head of the state of the republic of India rather than the head of the government. As such, the president does not have active and effective role to play in the governance.

          A.P.J. Abdul Kalam - 2002 to 2007

Article 52 of the constitution states: “There shall be a President of India. The executive powers of the Union shall be vested in the President. He, as the head of a state, symbolizes the nation. In some democratic systems, the head of the state is also the head of the government and, therefore, he will also be the head of the political executive. The US Presidency represents this form. In Britain, the monarch is the symbolic head, representing the British nation. The powers of the Government are vested in the political office of the Prime Minister. In Indian Parliamentary democracy we have adopted the latter form (British form). The President of India is the first citizen and represents the Indian nation and does not, therefore, belong to any particular political party. He is elected by the representatives of the people through an Electoral College.”

Article 54 of the constitution says: "The President shall be elected by the members of an electoral college consisting of the elected members of both Houses of Parliament and The elected members of the Legislative Assemblies of the States (including National Capital Territory of Delhi and the Union Territory of Pondicherry."

                    Pranab Mukherjee

Keeping in mind the highly decorative chair of the President of India that has been equated with the British Monarch; the twelve Indian Presidents were elected unanimously, with consensus between the ruling and the opposition parties, in the independent India. The list of the Presidents of India from the latest to the earliest is as follows:
  1. Pratibha Patil – 2007 to date
  2. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam - 2002 to 2007
  3. K. R. Narayanan - 1997 to 2002
  4. Shankar Dayal Sharma - 1992 to 1997
  5. R Venkataraman - 1987 to 1992
  6. Giani Zail Singh - 1982 to 1987
  7. Neelam Sanjiva Reddy - 1977 to 1982
  8. Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed - 1974 to 1977
  9. Varahagiri Venkata Giri - 1969 to 1974
  10. Zakir Husain - 1967 to 1969
  11. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan 1962 to 1967
  12. Rajendra Prasad - 1950 to 1962
Now, since the current President Mrs Pratibha Patil is going to retire in July 2012 an election for the highest Indian government position is going to be held shortly. The 2012 President’s election is quite different from those held in the past because of the ongoing number-game being played by the ruling alliance and amassing majority votes for appointing a person of their choice. The street politics played by the Indian politicians in this election has lowered the prestige of the royal position of the President.

The following are the unconventional developments observed among the Indian politicians for the election of the next President of India:
  1. On 14 June 2012 the chairperson of the ruling alliance UPA declared the names of Pranab Mukherjee (Finance Minister) and Hamid Ansari (Vice President of India) as their proposed candidates for the election of the President of India.
  2. It looked quite odd when the ruling party preferred to propose two options for the fellow parties to choose one for the President’s election.
  3. The ruling party alliance UPA should better have called a meeting with the opposition party alliance, something like an all-party meet to discuss a consensus candidate for the post of President.
  4. Pranab Mukherjee who appears to be the heavy-weight in Congress Party could also be a prospective candidate for prime Minister in the next general election.
  5. Pranab Mukherjee is an expert politician and played the role of troubleshooter in the Congress Party. The attempt for elevating him to the post of the President might be with some calculated purposes.
  6. The additional and optional name of Hamid Ansari might be for playing the minority card. His name might also been projected to counterweight the opposition candidate Abdul Kalam, the hi-profile renowned space scientist and the Ex-President of India.
  7. The opposition party alliance has projected the name of Abdul Kalam, a globally acclaimed personality in science and technology and who has served as the President of India.
  8. The election for the post of the first citizen of India has turned into a number game when the ruling Congress party set out for amassing majority votes by wooing their supporting parties with diverse policies and philosophies.
  9. A couple of their allies headed by Mamta Banerjee and Mulayam Singh Yadav publically expressed inclination for the opposition candidate Abdul Kalam. They even suggested the name of Man Mohan Singh, the current Prime Minister as the candidate.
  10. This difference of policies among the allies of UPA has sparked off possibilities of political realignment and repolarization in India.
Whoever becomes the next President of India is a different matter. Nonetheless, the way the Indian ruling alliance is openly playing the number-game in this election, has exposed their doubtful intentions. The UPA could better have invited the opposition alliance NDA and collectively nominated a consensus candidate for the decorative royal post of the President of India. By doing so they would have upheld the prestige of indian republic in the eyes of the global community.

Moon Phases: How they Differ From Lunar Eclipse?

Click on the image to see enlarged view

© Harish Jharia

There is a celestial phenomenon called ‘the phases of moon’, in which the moon successively changes its shape, every day, from ‘full moon’ to ‘new moon’ in a fortnight and from ‘new moon’ to ‘full moon’ in the following fortnight. We are going to discuss phases of moon in this article in a common man’s language, without using scientific and astronomical terminologies.

What are phases of moon?
As you know that the moon does not have its own glow and it would be visible to us only when sunrays fall on its surface. Sunrays illuminate half of the moon that is visible to us and the other half of it left dark and apparently remains invisible to us. This is so because moon is a spherical body. This half lit and half dark moon moves around our earth at different angles on different days. In these successively changing situations, the illuminated portion of moon looks to us in different shapes on different days.

Full Moon (पूर्णिमा):
Moon does not glow on its own and is only visible to us when sunrays fall on its surface. Full moon would be visible to us, in its full glow, when earth positions itself in-between sun and moon in a straight line.

New Moon (अमावस्या):
New-moon could be better caller as ‘no-moon’ because moon is not visible on new moon day. This situation arises when the moon positions itself between sun and earth and the dark half of the moon faces towards the earth in its day time. Resultantly, in day time the new moon remains invisible to us.

Phases of moon (चंद्र कलाएँ):
Whereas, the new-moon remains invisible and full-moon shines in its full glow, the moon takes 15 days for growing from new-moon to full moon, successively increasing in its size day-by-day. From the very next day after new-moon and full-moon the changing sizes of the illuminated moon starts appearing in early mornings and late evenings.

You may refer the above illustration wherein various positions of moon vis-à-vis earth are shown receiving parallel sunrays from their left side. Apparently, the left halves of earth and moon are illuminated with sunlight (day time) and the right halves of those are left dark (night time). The shapes and views of moon (as visible from earth) in three different situations, that is- New-moon, full-moon and half-moon are also illustrated at the bottom of the sketch.
