US President Barack Obama’s Speech in Indian Parliament: US declares India the most preferred permanent member to the United Nations Security Council UNSC

United Nations Organization UNO

It was a long cherished dream of India to become a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council UNSC so that this country could also be recognized as one of the global powers in the world and would have a ‘say’ in the international affairs dealt with by the United Nations Organization UNO

In a historic address to the joint session of Indian Parliament, on 7 November 2010, US President Barack Obama declared in an unambiguous statement and without mincing words that India is the most competent nation to become a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.

Followed by an unprecedented applause and cheer among the members of Indian parliament, across party lines, he declared that United States wanted to see India as an integral part of the United Nations Security Council UNSC.  The most remarkable part of his statement was that the US President was not speaking merely about their support for seeking a seat for Indiain UNSC.

He, in fact announced the US policy to have India as a permanent member in the UNSC. President Barack Obama said- "I can say today -- in years ahead, I look forward to a reformed UN Security Council that includes India as a permanent member"
